With Earth Day on April 22 coming up, Claremont High School (CHS) has not only motivated students to take action on campus, but also around the Claremont community. The Sustainability Storytelling workshop promotes the 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations (UN), each of which is meant to inform an audience on different topics pertaining to a healthy ecosystem: on land, in the sea, and in our own society. These goals are meant to teach children specifically that the idea of sustainability extends far past just the environment. This workshop helps students achieve the California Civic Seal of Engagement. In the workshop, students will attend elementary schools around Claremont and read picture books in four languages: Spanish, English, German, and French pertaining to one of the sustainable development goals. These goals include: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Gender Equality, Climate Change, and Peace.
Administered by Dr. Arboleda, one of CHS’s history teachers and civic project coordinator for the district, the workshop began on April 1. After completing research on at least one of the UN goals, students will attend a seminar about storytelling directed by Shamini Dias, Director of Transdisciplinary Studies at Claremont Graduate University, on Earth Day. The following week, Sustainability Storytelling will travel to elementary schools around Claremont and begin reading to elementary school students. Students hope that their storytelling will leave a lasting impact on Claremont and remind us that sustainability is not just about the environment, but also about our own lives and health.
