Almost every day in fourth period, students watch the Wolfcast. Sometimes there are special segments for campus events and ASB news where the ASB President and Vice President speak, but what is often left out is the behind-the-scenes.
Kira Sweeney, for example, is the freshman class president. Sweeney is on JV cheer and has been doing ASB for three years, starting in 7th grade at El Roble Intermediate School. She was also a part of the student council in elementary school. Sweeny has always loved being a leader and helping people be heard and seen. As a cheerleader, she feels her experiences from the sport help with her leadership skills. Sweeney’s position as president involves leading the freshmen class in a variety of events, whether that is float building or making posters; she gets it done! As a cheerleader, she feels this helps a lot.
“An ASB president should be someone you can always count on… and make sure that everyone’s ideas are valued,” Sweeney said.
Quin Martinez is the freshman class representative. Martinez is on the JV football team, and in his free time, he enjoys playing Clash Royale, eating food, and cooking—specifically instant ramen. Martinez hopes to go to a four-year college, perhaps Oregon University, and have a job in sports. As the freshman class representative, Martinez’s job is to help out with things like making posters and leading the class of ‘29. Martinez thinks his job in ASB is very fun and enjoyable. “I like ASB because I am surrounded by lovely people who push me to be my greatest, and I like working with my friends,” Martinez said.
Alison Vong is the sophomore class president. Vong is a member of Key Club, and in her free time, she enjoys going to the gym and hanging out with her two sisters. Vong’s job in ASB is to delegate roles to the rest of her class. She is particularly best around rally time, carrying the responsibility of organizing the class. Vong likes being the president, although it can be stressful, especially when people are not doing what they are supposed to do. “The best part about being president is when you see all the hard work come together,” Vong said.
Henry Chang is the junior class president. Chang likes to be involved in the community and volunteers during his free time. He is on the varsity tennis team and JV basketball team. As class president, Chang’s job is to make sure everyone is on task, plan events, and coordinate with the class boosters. Chang appreciates the team camaraderie of ASB, which makes his role as president substantially more enjoyable. “I like being president because it gets me more involved and I have more connections with people on campus,” Chang said.
Senior Samantha Flores is the ASB treasurer. Flores has been in ASB for three years, has been on the cheer team for three years, and is currently in five clubs. As treasurer, Flores signs and approves all the checks, budgets, and fundraisers, and reads them out loud at every business meeting. Flores enjoys her position, as she contributes to ASB’s purpose. “I really like ASB because we get to be a part of building people’s memories,” Flores said.
It is important to recognize the ASB positions that are not always in the spotlight. These positions help make school more fun and involved, whether that is rallies, dances, or ASB posters around the school. These positions are the backbone of ASB, serving the school as a whole.
