Their running career started when they were 13. In the next five years, the two star runners would go on to consistently place in their respective races. Now, Chris and Maddie Coles sprint off to continue their journey at UC Davis.
Before committing to UC Davis, the two were considering a surplus of other schools, including UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Riverside, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and Saint Mary’s. However, the coaches, the people, and the campus of UC Davis was what really sold it for them.
“We went up on a joint visit and we were really impressed by the coaches and the plans they had set forth for us, “The facilities were really sick and the campus was really cool,”
At UC Davis, Chris Coles will be majoring in biochemistry, but plans to switch to another branch of biology. Maddie Coles will be double-majoring in psychology and mathematics.
While the Coles twins are excited about their next chapter at UC Davis, they are thankful for the memories they have made at CHS. They will miss the 24 hour relays, travel trips up to state championships, and the moments the cross country team has shared.
“This [2022] season was a big highlight because we had spent a lot of time away [from each other] because of COVID,” Chris Coles said. “Something that was really nice about the season was, for most people, it was about enjoying it and having fun because it had been so long since we had a normal season.”
The Coles twins would also like to give a shout out to the people who shaped their experience at CHS.
“First off, I want to shout out my barber,” Chris Coles said. “Second off, I would like to shout out Mr. Thomas for not coming to my banquet,”
“I’ll shout out Mr. Thomas for getting in my photo when I signed but not Chris’ and I’m going to shout out Denise Chen because she [raced] at Masters so I’m really excited to see what she does,” Maddie Coles said.
The Coles twins have a bright future ahead of them at UC Davis, and we all wish them the best of luck on their endeavors.
