Alumna Troy Coaches Sprints
CHS 2009 alumna Charmaine Troy has returned home to coach boys’ and girls’ JV and varsity sprints for the track team. Troy herself participated in track; she performed long jump, triple jump, and high jump when she was a student at CHS.
Troy found her calling in college to become a coach. She is currently attending Cal State San Bernardino. In the past, she has trained at Mt. SAC, Cal Poly, Cal State San Bernardino, and Chaffey College, but she never competed because of a knee injury. She had a personal coach who graciously gave her the opportunity to coach at Chino High School where she coached long and triple jump. Troy coached there for two years before transferring over to CHS. She eventually left Chino High because she did not agree with the coaching method.
“I was very serious about the kids learning their technique, so that they could learn, practice, and prevent injuries,” Troy said. “Some of the coaches did not have knowledge on how to do that, so I didn’t want to stay because we didn’t agree on how we should run the track program.”
Troy found her niche when CHS Head Coach Veronica Amarasekara was looking for someone to coach technique for sprinters. Coach Troy jumped at the offer.
Troy has high expectations for the athletes this year. She would like to see all of her athletes improve, and optimally, she would love to see all of her athletes make it to CIF.
“I would like all of the athletes to keep up their grades, treat people well and hopefully prepare for their academic journey after graduating high school or doing whatever brings them joy,” Troy said.
From her years of experience and hard work, Troy’s proudest moments come from seeing her athletes’ growth in confidence. CHS gains a dedicated and seasoned coach for this year’s track season and, hopefully, many seasons to come.
