Reaching 6,072 feet of track, California Screamin’ is the third-longest steel roller coaster in America. 5.8 million pounds of steel were used to build the roller coaster. It takes off at a speed of 55 mph, making it the fastest ride at the entire Disneyland Resort. Many children had their first roller coaster experience on this popular ride. This iconic ride is located in California Adventure’s Paradise Pier and has been one of the biggest attractions in the park for 16 years. However, Disney has made it their newest renovation to retheme California Screamin’.
According to Disney News, it is official that California Adventure is closing the classic California Screamin’ ride to retheme it to the Incredicoaster, based on Pixar’s “The Incredibles,” on Jan. 8, 2018. This change is in part of turning Paradise Pier into Pixar Pier, where a section (or “neighborhood”) will be dedicated to the movie’s Parr family. The Incredicoaster will be the same ride as California Screamin’, including the sudden countdown launch and loop, but the iconic on-ride music will be replaced with music from the film. The Disney Parks Blog states that the updated attraction “will feature a mid-century-modern-style loading area, new character moments and a new look for the ride vehicles.” This change is quite similar to the switch from The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror to Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, which opened in May of this year. However, there are many mixed reactions by Disney Parks aficionados towards all these changes, but like with the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Incredicoaster could be one of the best attractions at the entire resort.
As stated before, the rest of California Adventure’s Paradise Pier will undergo a complete overhaul, transforming itself into Pixar Pier by summer 2018. This new area will feature four distinct neighborhoods, themed to “The Incredibles,” “Toy Story,” “Inside Out,” and all of the other Pixar films. Paradise Pier was one of California Adventure’s original lands when it first opened in 2001. In 2009, the land’s Ferris wheel was decorated with its iconic Mickey Mouse face, which has since become the subject of many posts on Instagram. Despite the land’s transformation, the Mickey Mouse face will remain, but the Ferris wheel gondolas will be replaced by gondolas themed to Pixar characters.
While California Screamin’ will face the chopping block in a few weeks, the thousands of memories of its riders will always remain. Nevertheless, as Walt Disney stated, Disneyland will never be complete, and the addition of Pixar Pier is sure to be an exciting one to California Adventure.
