Sophia Sink is the epitome of “work hard, play hard.” Sink is one of the three captains for Claremont High School Varsity Soccer and has been a four-year varsity member. She first started playing soccer when she was four years old, and just by watching Sophia attack the field, it is clear to just about anyone that she truly loves the game.
“Soccer just clicked with me, and I loved the excitement of the game, as each play is something different and nothing is predictable,” Sink said.
Sink is notable for playing just about every minute of every game. She takes virtually every free kick due to her powerhouse of a kick, a responsibility she handles with confidence and precision.
Sink has definitely left her mark here at Claremont High School. Still, she will soon begin a new chapter at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where she will take on a new position in the field. After going through the recruiting process, Sink felt that Embry-Riddle was the place she was meant to be, offering the opportunity to continue growing as a player. During the season, she trains multiple days a week, with games midweek and on Fridays, and even on off days, she finds time to train on the field or in the gym. Sink is supported by coaches and teammates who constantly push her to improve.
“Our team chemistry has contributed to the team’s success by growing closer to one another and learning how to work together on the field,” Sink said.
Team chemistry is clearly a crucial factor for one’s success. Sink’s teammates especially make note of her welcoming personality and the kindness she fosters on the team. Avery Hilber, one of Sink’s teammates, shares her critical role on the team.“When I first joined the varsity team as a freshman, I was intimidated by Sophia’s presence, but as I got closer to her this year, I learned she was really nice and helped everyone feel comfortable on the team,” Hilber said.
As the athlete of the month, Sink represents more than just a score on the scoreboard, but a dominant presence on the field. This recognition honors the countless hours she has put into the Claremont High Varsity Soccer program. “Being named athlete of the month is meaningful to me because it reflects the work I put in both on and off the field, and it reassures me that hard work doesn’t go unnoticed,” Sink said.
Sink’s admirable dedication certainly is appreciated by all those who have had the privilege of experiencing it. She is truly a treasure to the various sports she has played, such as flag football, softball, and most importantly, soccer. Sink could play just about any sport and thrive in any position she is put into.
