Every Friday, hundreds of fans have their eyes on Claremont’s athletic genius, making jump catches and pulling off all-star tackles: #17 Doug Yegge. Every week is better than the last for Yegge. He spots the quarterback like no other and is always able to make impressive runs downfield. Across his many plays on both sides of the ball, Yegge is astoundingly consistent.
Going from a historical 5-0 preseason win streak, the likes of which have not been seen in over 20 years of Wolfpack history, the Claremont High School Wolfpack team is doing extremely well. Tied for the best record in the Sierra League at 6-1, the team is set up for a generational run.
Yegge started playing football in the fifth grade, competing in tackle football for the first time freshman year. He spent the beginning of his high school career at neighboring school Damien High in Pomona, but transferred to Claremont early in his Junior year. In his second year here, Yegge is having a wonderful season. As the team’s wide receiver and cornerback, Yegge has to play on offense and on defense, making him a cornerstone of this year’s Wolfpack Varsity team.
Playing great at his position, Yegge reflects on the inspiration for his game: Los Angeles Rams Wide Receiver Davante Adams. “That’s why I wear number 17,” said Yegge. Adams is known in the NFL for his hard work ethic, catching abilities, and his chemistry with his quarterback—all qualities that Yegge demonstrates on the field.
Football is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. Maintaining a good headspace is crucial for winning, and Yegge has some thoughts on the team mindset. “We’re as a full team, very confident, not cocky, but very confident about our ability,” Yege said. Yegge’s pulse on the team is a representation of his ability to understand and feel the vibes on the team, helping them work better to win more games.
As the Wolfpack Football team makes a wonderful stretch deep into the season, the team has a bright future ahead of it, especially for league games. CHS Football, carried forward by Doug Yegge, is looking at a powerful push and a deep run in CIF this year.
