Cons of Coed Sports Teams
There has been a recent uprising of coed sports teams, but there is much controversy surrounding the topic. Many agree that coed sports teams may be a progressive way to express equality between males and female. The obvious argument is presented due because many believe men are physically stronger than women. Although most people agree with this way of competing, there are surprising amounts of downsides that many may not be aware of. Males and females have major differences both mentally and physically, which creates the idea that they would not play well together.
A major reason why coed sports teams may lack efficiency is the fact that the team’s coach may treat the players differently because of their gender. In most cases, whether it be at home, in sports teams, in schools, or in a workplace, there has always been stigma around parents or people of authority treating males and females differently from one another other. Whether there is specific reasoning for this or not, one cannot argue that this is the way many people are. This could affect the team’s dynamic in the sense that one player may feel they are being treated unfairly compared to another player.
It is a common misconception that males are stronger than females and because of this many believe they would not make a cohesive team. In the instance that a male is facing a female during a sports game or match, the male may feel the urge to go easy on the female because he believes she is not up to par with his strength. Another reason a male may be uncomfortable being in a team with females is due to the fact that they do not want to look bad if they lose to their female opponent This way of thinking can affect the outcome of the team’s losses and wins. In the end, coed sports seem to have more downsides then positives.
