For more than thirty years, Robert Hoyle has been a welcoming presence at Claremont High. As he completes his final year teaching, it is important to look back at all of the achievements he has gathered during his time here.
Before he came to Claremont High, Hoyle lived an incredibly interesting life. His senior year of high school, he had a top tier chemistry teacher: it was through this influence that Hoyle fell in love with biology. Into his college years, he was enrolled in University of California San Diego for a pre-med program for two years. At the same time, Hoyle worked in a sales job; his charisma and love to socialize worked in tandem to give him a good amount of success through this effort. Though he had thoughts of becoming a doctor, the pull towards a social career was irresistible. He also still had a strong fondness for athletics, and his younger days of playing baseball made him miss the field. Through the fog of all these preferences a single light emerged – a high school biology teacher/baseball coach combo.
For the next thirty-one years, Hoyle thrived in this environment. He taught integrated science, biology, anatomy and physiology, environmental science, physical world science, marine biology, and IB biology, an impressive lineup showing a great breadth of dedication and intelligence. He also participated in a number of other activities on campus: he has been the advisor to the gaming club, the ultimate frisbee club, the surf club; he has been the announcer for football, baseball, soccer, softball; he has also been a coach for CHS football and softball. Again, his impact on Claremont High has been very notable and he has set up many students for success.
Now that he is retiring, Hoyle has a number of things he is looking forward to. One is something many students wish they could relate to – taking a vacation in September. This is the first opportunity to do so in thirty years. Hoyle will spend some family time on the beaches of Florida, and the rides of Disney World. As he reflects on his time here, it is clear Hoyle has had many interesting experiences. There was a ten year stretch where Hoyle had at least one of his children in class, which poses a few funny questions; he landed on treating them like regular students, with the only difference being their parents know when their homework is due.
Robert Hoyle is an incredibly dedicated and inspiring teacher. His time here at Claremont High will not be forgotten, and he is leaving behind a large pair of shoes to fill. As the next few years progress, look out for Mr. Hoyle at our games around campus, as he might stop by here and there. From the entirety of Claremont High, students present and past, thank you Mr. Hoyle!
