On January 22, 2026, Arctic Monkeys fans worldwide heard “Mad Sounds” as “Opening Night,” the band’s newest song, played on repeat. Ironically, January 2026 marks the band’s 20th anniversary since they debuted their first album, “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.” For many, “Opening Night” came as a surprise. With Arctic Monkeys’ last album release before “Opening Night,” “The Car,” released on October 21, 2022, gaining over 500 million views on Spotify, fans were concerned about the band seemingly “breaking up.” However, despite the rumors, the band is stronger than before, rapidly gaining new fans, most importantly, working towards a beneficial cause.
In the process of developing their newest track, Arctic Monkeys worked with War Child Records, which is an independent record label launched by a UK-based charity called War Child. The charity is meant to raise funds for children who face numerous conflicts around the world. Despite its recent recognition, War Child Records has been flighting for this clause since the launch of their first album “HELP” on Sept. 9, 1995. Although the album was recorded in one day, “HELP” raised over £1.25 million (about $1.6 million dollars) for children who were affected by the Bosnian War. “Opening Night” is featured as the first track on War Child Records’ newest album “HELP(2),” which was recently released on March 6. In addition to Arctic Monkeys, the album features popular artists such as Olivia Rodrigo and beabadoobee. However, War Child Records and Arctic Monkeys do more than help children in war zones. The band helps young audiences associate important emotions in their lives, such as love and sadness, with their iconic songs–“I Wanna Be Yours,” “Only Ones Who Know,” and “Opening Night” – being no exception.
Freshman Malia Mendez shared her thoughts on Arctic Monkeys’ newest song.
“I think that in addition to being a really good song, they are supporting a really good cause,” Mendez said. “I think the money is being put towards something important.”
Connecting audiences both young and old, and helping children around the world, Arctic Monkeys has evidently been one of the most successful bands the world has ever seen. As of now, “Opening Night” has given fans a new song to play on repeat, but soon, they will “Snap Out Of It” and be longing for more.
