The Game of the Year award is presented annually by The Game Awards, an awards ceremony established in 2014. Each year, there is tough competition between developers to release a game deserving of this prestigious award. This year, one of the many competitors is no other than Hollow Knight: Silksong.
In February of 2017, developers Team Cherry released a game called “Hollow Knight.” It was a 2D platformer/metroidvania, and although overlooked at first, it quickly gained traction throughout the following years. At $15 per copy, Team Cherry has made 84.5 million dollars in gross revenue from the game. The community behind the game has been huge, with thousands of videos breaking down the lore, exploring new mechanics, speedrunning, and simply playing the game. With this came the big question: when will the next “Hollow Knight” game release? Team Cherry answered this in 2019 by promising the community “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” a sequel themed around one of the characters in the original game, Hornet.
Throughout the years between the announcement and the release of the game, there were many people doubting that Team Cherry would follow through. With release dates being consistently pushed back, the community even had a running joke separating its constituents into “believers” and “doubters.” The years of waiting were constantly building tension and hype for the release, and when it finally happened, the gaming community exploded.
In September of 2025, “Hollow Knight: Silksong” was finally released. The internet boomed with excitement. The number of people trying to purchase the game, whether it be through the Nintendo eShop, Steam, or PlayStation, had been so much as to crash the shops’ servers. People were forced to wait to purchase the game until server activity calmed down and the servers began to function again. Andrew Ni, Claremont High junior reported his experiences. “I had to wait six hours to even be able to purchase Silksong,” Ni said.
Thus far, Silksong has sold 4.2 million copies, despite only being available for two months. With this, it has become a strong contender for the 2025 Game of the Year award and is continuing to maintain its popularity.
