Fast-paced, suspenseful, and intriguing, Leigh Bardugo’s “Six Of Crows” defies all the stereotypes of typical Young Adult novels. It centers around six teenage outcasts — a runaway, a sharpshooter, a convict, a (literal) heartstopper, a spy, and a killer — who must work together to pull off an impossible heist to earn an unbelievable reward. The plot twists in this novel will keep readers guessing, and the expansive fantastical world-building and gripping plot keep readers interested long after the pages have ended. As fantastic as the plot is, the best aspect of the book is undoubtedly the characters. Each main character is delightfully written and thoroughly developed, a rarity for YA novels. Mystery is the prime genre, but the relationships between characters— both platonic and romantic— delight readers without overtaking the main plot. I would rate this Grishaverse novel a solid 9/10, the only drawback being the overly wordy writing style.
