She-Hulk: cringe or comedic?
One of the many new shows that have been added to Disney Plus this past August is She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. This new show is listed as a comedy but is far from it, it lacks fundamental elements of comedy, making it fall flat. The show is based on the She-Hulk comic series but poorly portrays the beloved character. The show reduces the lovable qualities of the character by failing to give her a compelling backstory other than the fact that she is an attorney. One of She-Hulk’s major flaws is the absence of context. Within the first fifteen minutes of the show, viewers learn who She-Hulk is and how she got her powers. Going into She-Hulk viewers need MCU (marvel cinematic universe) background knowledge. Viewers need to learn who The Hulk is, all the hardships he faced. General knowledge of other characters mentioned within the show like Tony Stark and Captain America would improve the jokes.
An example of an poorly made scene in the third episode credits we see Jennifer in her hulk form with Megan Thee Stallion twerking together. The directors tried to try to connect with their viewers to the show by making a cameo with a popular artist among teens. This scene felt like a failure because there really is not a comedic aspect of a green six foot seven-inch superpowered hulk twerking.
Many fans are upset with the quality of CGI (computer-generated imagery) for Jennifer’s alter hulk ego. They believe that she should have been bulkier like the original Hulk’s body. When directors were asked about CGI, they claimed that it was hard to make women’s bodies. This seems like a lame excuse to get away with low-quality editing.
Overall, She-Hulk: Attorney of Law is an extremely cringey show. It discards all of the trauma Bruce Banner went through for being a Hulk and all he had to overcome with snarky jokes made by Jennifer Walters, his cousin who later became a hulk. The show does not give any context whatsoever as to what is going on throughout the beginning of the show. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was not the Hulk smash Marvel was hoping it would be.
