Requiem For a Scream: Last Days of the Hollywood Tower of Terror
The Tower of Terror is one of the most popular attractions at the Disneyland Resort, with wait times often clocking in for over two hours and hundreds of guests lining up to ride the thrilling drop tower every day. However as of right now, the Tower’s days are done.
At the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Entertainment announced that a new attraction – themed to “Guardians of the Galaxy” – would replace the beloved Tower of Terror at California Adventure. This attraction, called Guardians of the Galaxy-Mission: Breakout!, would still have the same drop tower ride experience that Tower of Terror had while marking a new step in the growing relationship between Disney and Marvel. The new ride is scheduled to open in summer 2017 to correlate with the release of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”, and it will be the first Marvel attraction to be at a Disney theme park in the US.
On blogs such as MiceChat and the Disney Parks Blog, fans of the ride blamed Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger for allowing such a monstrosity to happen, taking away one of the most iconic attractions in all of Disneyland. The criticism of Tower of Terror’s closing has even spread to CHS, where many students are regular park goers. Freshman Camille Movafagian, a Disneyland Annual Pass holder, expresses lament for its closure.
“Tower of Terror is one of my favorite rides in California Adventure. Disney and Marvel do go hand in hand, and I’m sure the Guardians ride is going to be cool, but it is really sad that Tower of Terror is closing,” Movafagian said.
Fans of the ride also felt that the Tower of Terror, with its purple dimly lit Hollywood Tower Hotel sign glowing, blended into the Hollywood backdrop area of California Adventure perfectly, whereas a Guardians of the Galaxy attraction does not, as it has practically nothing to do with California at all.
Although there are a number of people who are sad to see the Tower go, some are feeling anxious and excited to see what the new Guardians of the Galaxy attraction could bring to Disney theme parks.
Disneyland may not be everybody’s favorite theme park, but it can almost be unanimously agreed that such an exhilarating and popular attraction like Tower of Terror closing is a somewhat tragic event in Disneyland’s history. There is a silver lining to all of this, however: the Tower of Terror will still be at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Disney World over in Orlando, and an exact copy of California Adventure’s version will remain at Disneyland Paris.
