Princess of Rap: Ice Spice
If there is one person whose songs have taken the world by storm, it is Ice Spice. The American rapper’s influence is everywhere. From the halls of Claremont High School to TikTok For You Page, Ice Spice has quickly become an internet sensation. “Boy’s a Liar, Pt 2” is her most recent song, which she co-wrote with Pink Pantheress. This viral hit was released on February 3, 2023. Her music has quickly shot to the top of the track charts, and The New York Times deems her “rap’s new princess.”
Many wonder the identity of Ice Spice and how she has become an international sensation. Her real name is Isis Gaston. Isis Gaston is a 23-year-old American rapper from The Bronx, New York. She got into hip-hop when she was seven, becoming inspired by listening to Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj. Ice Spice’s career began in 2021 during her time at the State University of New York. Eventually, Ice Spice dropped out of college and continued making tracks with music artist, RiotUSA. Drake ended up playing and sharing her song “Munch (feelin’ you)” on social media. This action helped her gain fame and took her song to the top of the music charts. With such popularity, Ice Spice’s songs have even surpassed The Beatles on Spotify plays. After “Munch (feelin’ you)”, Ice Spice created the single “Bikini Bottom” and then “Boy’s a Liar, Pt 2”. She began to be nicknamed Princess Diana by her fans, the Munchkins, because of her references to the Princess in recent songs. The Munchkins are talking about her hit songs and major celebrities such as Nicki Minaj have crowned her as The Princess of Rap. Ice Spice has a lot of talent and dedication to her music. She plans to release more singles and albums going forward. Ice Spice has been making music for years and is determined to learn and expand her styles.
With the prevalence of Women’s History Month, it is important to recognize female rappers in such a male-dominated space. Ice Spice commented about this in an interview with The New York Times.
“I’d rather there be more girls [in the industry],” Ice Spice said. “I feel like there are so many more men rapping than girls, and I think it should be balanced.”
Ice Spice is creating music for women by women. Ice Spice is just getting started in the music industry and will continue to grow in terms of support and popularity in the future. She is gaining more importance each day and helping women feel represented in rap. Already receiving approval from the Queen of Rap, Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice is the next rapping sensation of our generation.
