Young MLB Star’s Death Leaves a Legacy

Florida Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez died on Monday, September 25.Two of Fernandez’s friends, Eddy Rivero and Emilio Macias, were killed along with Fernandez. They were trolling which is a form of fishing. They were killed when the boat crashed into a jetty. All three were thrown from the boat on impact leaving investigators wondering who was driving the boat when it crashed. After four seasons with the marlins Fernandez Was well on his way to becoming one of the game’s best pitchers. He is a Cy Young award candidate for this year, which goes to the best pitcher in the league, and he also won the Rookie of the Year award in 2013.

Fernandez was born in Santa Clara, Cuba.  In 2008, at the age of 15, he was able to defect from Cuba on his fourth try. He had been placed in jail for all three prior attempts to leave Cuba,and he was finally reunited with his father in the Miami area in 2009. At the age of 20,  the Marlins drafted Fernandez in the first round and gave him a $2 million signing bonus.  His death has not only impacted the fans of the Marlins anyone who had been greatly impacted by the sport. “It is sad he was a great baseball player,” freshman Brian Gavin

Many people from all over the nation believe that Fernandez was one of the best and will forever leave a lasting legacy on the baseball and pitching world Fernandez has been a great player and person to the baseball community.
