The Dark Side of Claremont
Step into the dark side of Claremont and maybe a lingering spirit will join. This is a night filled with spooky frights. The fourth annual Ghost Walk features a 75 minute walk within the Claremont Village accompanied by ghost stories from citizens and local businesses. The event is hosted by the Claremont Village Market Group and Claremont Girl Scouts Troop 1094, and will take place from October 1-2. Pre-sale tickets are available for purchase at Bert & Rocky’s located on 242 Yale Ave.
The event’s ghost story recitations come courtesy of Claremont college professors, as well as members of the Claremont Girl Scouts who escort attendees for the walk’s duration. The walk is very popular and has sold out every year since its very first. The walk is for a good cause as all the profits made are given back to troop 1094. With the money, the Girl Scouts are able to fund their projects and make improvements.
At 141 Harvard there is a ‘gypsy caravan’ set up that contains several activities like tarot card reading and tea leaf reading. Some of the ghost stories are also held at Pomona College. The demographic of this event is generally younger teens up to adults, but the event is public and open to whoever wishes to attend. A head of the event, Joan Bunte, advises those who cannot walk long distances would probably not be able to participate as it is a longer walk.
“I just love that this event is planned, prepped and presented by Girl Scouts along with their leaders and parents. When our event began the girls were fifth graders at Sycamore Elementary and now they are eighth graders at El Roble. For the past two years, the Scouts helped lead the tours as docents and even presented the Ghost Stories at village and college locations. The activities at the Gypsy Caravan are planned and carried out by the girls. These Scouts are learning valuable life lessons by participating in the Ghost Walk. It is my honor to have worked with these outstanding young women for the past three years and look forward to the 2016 Walk with much anticipation about what additions and improvements are being added to the Gypsy Caravan and the Ghost Tours,” Ms. Joan Bunte, a representer of Claremont Village Marketing Group said.
From previous years, it has been noted this is an enjoyable and successful event. It is a unique experience and one might find out a place they are very familiar with, is haunted. Places of hauntings in Claremont include Bridges Auditorium and several other sites that will be revealed whilst on the walk. With funds going back to benefit a hardworking local Girl Scout Troop and a fun night, the Ghost Walk is definitely an event one should attend.
