Appreciate Art at the Claremont Art Walk

The Claremont Art Walk is a festive event that takes place the first Saturday of every month. It is a fun place that also teaches people about the beauty of art. In the Claremont village, this free event is open to the public and all ages are welcome. Throughout the event, many local art galleries are open for browsing, music plays, and food and drinks are available as well. The next one occurs on Feb. 6 from 6-9 p.m. and is run by Claremont volunteers. The event is one of the many traditions that Claremont has to celebrate art.

During the Art Walk, the village will be transformed into an art district, where artists will sell their works. Art is available in many different forms, priced from affordable to luxurious. Most of the artists are local; however, there are artists from other communities as well. One can see many different types of art at the event such as abstract and landscape. Recently, photography by Micheal D’Avello and art by Anne Seltzer was featured. Besides types of visual arts, live music can be heard on the streets from bands such as HABES + PLU. Throughout the evening, street performers will also showcase their talent. There are also activities for children, such as face painting. The Art Walk provides enjoyment, not just for eyes, but for many reasons.

“It [the Art Walk] would be fun because your perspective of art will be broadened. Art is all about creativity and seeing things in a different way,” freshman Faith Nishimura said.

Art gives students a chance to explore different options, and the Art Walk is the perfect place to do it.

The Art Walk is a tradition that was brought up by Claremont’s active past in art. Claremont’s history in art begins with a man named Millard Sheets. Sheets was responsible for starting a successful art program at Scripps College. From there, Sheets hired teachers to help teach students. Soon, Claremont was attracting many artists such as Karl Benjamin, a famous abstract artist. Benjamin became famous in 1959, and called Claremont the epicenter of art in Southern California. The Art Walk is a way of honoring all of these great artists who dedicated their lives to art in Claremont.

Overall, the Art Walk is a great experience for those looking to enjoy the beauty of art. Attendees will enjoy face painting and different types of food and drinks in an event that honors Claremont art. It is a fun place where families can bond and learn about the importance of art. Hopefully, many people will attend and enjoy their experience at the Art Walk.
