In a recent interview with Matthew McConaughey at the CNN and Variety Town Hall Event on February 21, 2026, Timothée Chalamet sparked controversy with comments he made about the ballet and opera communities. Chalamet had been talking about the need to keep movie theaters relevant. He said that he does not want to work in ballet and opera, or “keep this thing alive,” because “no one” cares about ballet or opera anymore.
CHS sophomore Mateo Martinez shared his own take on Chalamet’s comments.
“I think he should not have commented on ballet and opera the way he did, but what Timothée Chalamet said was inherently true,” Martinez said. “No one goes to see ballet and opera anymore; it is a dying art. But instead of making comments like ‘no one cares about it anymore,’ go out to see those things, for example, buy a show ticket for your local theatre.”
Martinez also explained a common opinion on this controversy. “I think if people are so upset that he got famous, why are they giving him attention?” Martinez said. “It did not deserve the amount of attention it got, but it is still important to state that we should always support art like opera and ballet.”
It is quite that simple. If something is dying, why do you refuse to help it? Instead of dragging on the same hate, find and support your local theatres and ballet companies, who would be more than happy to accept donations. As Chalamet has proven several times throughout his career with disrespectful comments, his opinion of ballet and opera has remained the same. He showed no growth in his choice of words because there was previously no public reaction to his behavior.
Besides the whole arts ordeal, Chalamet has commented about women and how people who do not wish to have kids live an “utterly bleak” life. Chalamet continued, saying that he believes “procreation is the reason we’re here.” Thousands of fans, mostly women, posted their opinions on his comment and how it is insensitive, misogynistic, and hypocritical, coming from the view of a man who does not have children of his own.
Further, Chalamet has made an online persona switch ever since his popularity blew up in the acting industry. It shifted from an indie-film and “alternative” persona to his “Marty Supreme” bold era; his old identity was completely abolished. His fans no longer find his personality attractive or alternative, and now they want to hold him accountable for his controversial opinions and behavior.
Amid his Saturday Night Live (SNL) hosting appearance on November 11, 2023, Chalamet was in a pre-taped sketch with the comedy group “Please Don’t Destroy,” where he made a joke about the militant Palestinian group Hamas. Chalamet’s character was in a band named “Hamas” in the skit, which had been aired roughly a month after the October 7, 2023, event. The death toll in Gaza had been rising, and his comment was tone deaf and disgusting considering the circumstances. But he continued to have the utmost support throughout the years until now.
There is much more to hold him accountable for other than his opinion on different forms of art. The insensitive jokes and tone-deaf comments should receive the same amount of attention and concern.
