Whether they are hyping students up at rallies or performing individually at competitions, the CHS Dance team generally appears as a fun and exciting group to be a part of. But behind the bright lights and consistent routines lies a reality only a few see—one filled with unseen struggles, intense pressure, and secrets that were once kept behind closed doors. Recently, members of the CHS dance team have come forward to speak about the actuality of the team itself and the people within it, exposing the truth nobody could believe was reality.
A former member of the CHS Dance team who wishes to remain anonymous revealed that throughout her entire four year experience, there was a constant battle of power between the coach and a current dance team captain; this ultimately led to the coach’s absence. Throughout the 2024-2025 school year—and even in years prior—the captain and her mother had relentlessly pushed for the coach’s removal through persistent calls and district meetings, despite other members supporting the original practices.
With the situation quickly escalating, an investigation led by new Assistant Principal of Student Services Mrs. Moxley began, despite an already clear bias. Throughout the duration of the captains’ and their mothers’ complaints, Mrs. Moxley would be one of the first to know of these issues, establishing a warped and one sided viewpoint on the dance team’s reality. As a result, the CHS dance coach was not given a chance to defend herself because Mrs. Moxley
had already taken a stance on the issues that were brought to her, which ultimately led to the dance team’s coach, Mrs. Jenn, departing indefinitely. Due to the coach’s absence, the assistant coach was left to run things. However, this replacement did not last long because the harassment soon shifted to her, forcing her to leave as well.
Now, the CHS dance team only had themselves and their parents to rely on, meaning captains were now in control over practices, routines, and just about everything else.
However, the current captain who contributed to the coach’s departure would not let the other two captains help lead the team, despite them all holding equal positions. This soon led to a consistent feud between the two senior captains, who both held different values for the team. The other senior claimed when she would speak upon the situation, she would get shut down by the adult figures who held power on the team.
As the toxicity levels only began increasing, the other senior captain and a few other dance members made the decision to take a step back from the team all together, posing critical questions, and demanding fair lines be drawn. As the situation continues, many wonder: When will justice be served for the students who try to address these issues, only to be silenced by adults who oversee these situations? Change is being demanded, and it needs to come from the very people our students are supposed to trust.
