Avid resident spreadsheet maker, strategy game connoisseur, and the founder of the Claremont High School Esports Club, CHS knows his name: Tyler Lam. Lam will be attending Georgia Institute of Technology or Georgia Tech as part of the incoming class of 2028 in the fall semester, bringing all of his tech savvy-ness with him.

Although Lam was initially reluctant to leave California for industrial engineering, visiting Georgia Tech reassured him of his decision. Nestled within the heart of Atlanta, Georgia Tech is a cornerstone of Atlanta’s vast technological industry.

“With the technological nature of the campus, and the culture change, I am excited to explore and grow in a new environment,” Lam said.

In the spring of his sophomore year, Lam decided to share his passion for esports with the CHS community, collaborating with Mr. Oberbeck to create the CHS Esports Club. Over the next two years, the club exploded in popularity under Lam’s leadership, expanding past 200 concurrent members, and hosting several successful tournaments and social events.

Other than expressing his passion for esports, Lam also applies his tech expertise in a variety of activities on campus, including Tech Theatre as a member of the Thespian Troupe 2129. He is also a member of the National Honors Society, the Science National Honors Society, and the Red Cross Club.

Outside of school, Lam strives to dedicate his time to serving and improving his community, such as attending California Boys and Girls State, a program simulating the American legislative government, over the summer of his junior year. After attending Boys and Girls State, Lam was motivated to become even more involved in his community, participating in the Student Advisory Board on Legislation in Education hosted by the California Association of Student Councils. At the program, Lam led a group to develop a technology-related legislative proposal, focusing on the issue of incorporating Artificial Intelligence into our learning environments. His proactive nature displays his passion for sparking change in his local community. For most people, high school is a rollercoaster filled with many twists and turns, but it is also filled with the support system to get through tough times. It is no exception for Lam.

“High school has been a wild ride, with classes getting harder and increasing responsibilities,” Lam said. “But growing and learning alongside my friends and teachers helped me persevere and prepared me for what’s ahead.”
