From volunteering at the YAK to performing with the color guard, CHS Senior Samira Kennebrew knows where her passions lie. Enthusiastic and kind, Kennebrew is a friendly face on campus and is always there to support her friends and hype up her teammates. She’s thrilled to have made it onto the Homecoming court, and despite hoping to win, she will be wishing the same for her friends.
“I feel amazing about being on court, I found that it’s really fun but I also hope that my other friends win too,” Kennebrew said. “I’m proud of us, so I hope others win this, but having friends on court is the best.”
Kennebrew stresses that being on court isn’t all fun and games, though, she has to miss class time for interviews and balance her schedule for rallies and other opportunities. But she is not a stranger to this sort of responsibility, with the amount of extracurricular activities she’s involved in. Not only is Kennebrew an active member of the Black Student Union who embraces the community it offers, she has also been competing in color guard since middle school. Currently, she is the captain of the CHS team and works directly with the coaches during both class and practice time by taking attendance and guiding the team through warm-ups.
After high school, Kennebrew looks forward to attending San Diego State University, where she plans to major in business and education. While enjoying an independent lifestyle, she hopes to continue her color guard journey and join the ranks of the award-winning Vox Artium team. Kennebrew has a piece of advice for anyone looking to be successful during high school.
“No matter if I have a game or rally, or any hectic days, I know I have to get my stuff done before the weekend. Monday is going to come around a little bit too quickly, you know it, so you can’t leave stuff to the last minute.” Kennebrew says. “In other words, would you rather be French fries, or a potato?”
