CHS Fans Find Fun in Fanfiction
Fan fiction is a virtual world for all fanatics to express themselves unabashedly. Fan fiction features the characters of an original book, television series, movie, comic, anime, etc. Fans create their own story, drawing inspiration from others’ works and interpreting them into their own stories. Fans are not limited to certain people, as fan fiction is accessible to people of all ages in any area. And of course, there are fans at CHS that enjoy writing fan fiction for the original work.
“You can change it to however you want,” Harry Potter devotee, a CHS student, said. “There are no limits; you can interpret things however you like to and start writing from there.”
Many students at CHS, enjoy fan fiction because it provides a sort of continuation for a storyline or characters they really like. There are many students at CHS who read fan fiction, and quite a few of them are active writers. When it comes to the world of fan fiction, anonymity can be an enticing aspect for those who wish to introduce themselves differently in a virtual world.
What is it that makes fan fiction so popular? Perhaps it is its uniqueness and abstractness; there are no concrete rules when it comes to writing fan fiction, simply because of the inherent fun in playing make-believe.
The Fox is a CHS student and avid reader of fan fiction who enjoys both reading and writing fan fiction. She is currently working on a piece inspired by the Little Prince, which is titled, “The Boy With Stars in His Eyes.” She has been working on it for several months, and focuses on the many elements that she plans on including in her story.
“I put a heavy emphasis on symbolism since it is so important,” The Fox said. “The basis itself is fundamental; you need to start with a firm foundation before you get into the details and focus on the intricacy of the story. However, I tend to look back at what I’ve written and think to myself how I can add more there, so I always underestimate how complicated I plan on making the story.”
Some students enjoy fan fiction because it means that they can exploit the plot holes that inevitably exist. One student at CHS has taken particular interest in the Transformers cinematic universe for multiple reasons. She enjoys writing fanfics to explore different story possibilities and to modify details and narratives to take a more logical and focused stance.
Fan fiction has forever changed the way writers write and the way readers read. The unifying effect that fan fiction has started has brought together a mass of enthusiastic fans that share the same passions. As to whether fan fiction will take over the world or not, fan fiction will eventually achieve global domination as we enter the era of fan fiction.
