A Road to Remember: Homecoming 2015 Princess Claire Colinco and Prince Matt Brown
Claire Colinco:
Despite her extremely busy schedule in ASB, senior class president Claire Colinco participates in many extracurricular activities inside and outside of CHS. She has been in ASB for four years, plays soccer for CHS and for the Surf Soccer Club team, is part of the Interact Club and the National Honor Society at CHS, and is an active member at her church. She plans to attend college and is aiming to enrol in UCLA, USC, or Point Loma Nazarene University.
Colinco loves food, soccer, and sleeping. She also loves to read and write and hopes to continue practicing this passion in the future. Colinco has always wanted to try skydiving or bridge diving because she thinks it would be fun and exciting, but so far, she has not worked up the courage to actually do those activities.
Although she is planning to attend college outside of Claremont, she will always remember the many meaningful experiences she had in high school. Out of all of the many memories Colinco has made at CHS, her most memorable experience during high school was participating in ASB with all of the dances, like homecoming and prom, and spending time with her friends.
ASB has been a very big part of Colinco’s high school career, and she loves the school spirit during ASB events. The advice she would give to the underclassmen is to work hard at school but to also make connections with friends and teachers. She believes that those relationships are very important to create in order to have a successful and enjoyable four years at CHS.
“I absolutely loved being involved in ASB and planning out all of the activities especially during homecoming season and helping plan prom last year was especially memorable,” Colinco said.
Colinco has experienced many memorable moments throughout high school and hopes to create many more during her last year here at CHS. She is proud of the person she has become and wants to continue to grow and improve. Colinco feels extremely grateful for this opportunity, but feels that the more important factor of homecoming is the high school being brought together as one on that day.
Matt Brown:
Surfing and swimming are only some of the independent activities that Matthew, or “Matt,” Brown enjoys doing. Brown is also president for the Teens for Troops club, an attorney for CHS mock trial, and an interact member for two years. Not including school clubs, he tutors Vista middle school after school, has been a Varsity water polo player from Freshman to Junior year, and a participant for the varsity swim team for three years. Brown is approachable and takes joy in surfing whenever he has free time.
Brown would like to attend Dartmouth College. He is not sure what he wants to pursue, so he is set on Dartmouth because they have a large variety of courses to choose from. Brown is most interested in the fields of science and wants to earn his MD to become a doctor, but still isn’t sure if that’s what he wants his future based on.
Brown has always grown up around water and learned how to swim nearly right after he learned how to walk. His weekends were usually spent surfing and his weekdays in swimming pools either teaching kids to swim or swimming himself.
“One of my childhood memories was living in a house near the Santa Barbara beach, and my aunt explaining to me how tide pools work,” Brown said. “Ever since then it kind of stuck with me.”
If Brown had the power to change CHS, he would give more fun opportunities for college research and allow students to travel to other countries to educate themselves on different civilizations. If Brown were to have the power to change himself, he would be a bit more easy going and drive a 1963 Aston Martin.
“My goal is to make a difference in myself and my perceptions of what goes on beyond my backyard and hopefully inspire someone somewhere with whatever I may decide to do later in life,” Brown said.
Brown’s advice for the underclassmen at CHS is to have a good time because he wishes he had taken advantage of everything. Brown also regrets not trying new things during his high school experience, not only academic, but at home and during his free time such as trying new foods and getting to know more people. He also suggests to not stick with just one group, but to get to know as many people as possible.
