From just asking about an athlete’s day to checking up on each person’s well-being, the new head coach of the cross-country team is a man who genuinely loves his job. When the previous head coach, Rob Lander, resigned in June, Bill Reeves stepped up to take the head-coaching position. He has already made some major changes to the ways the athletes train by starting workouts early in the summer as well as choosing the top 14 male and female runners at the start of practices. In addition, he has added bleacher and hurdle drills, strides, as well as tough abdominal workouts to strengthen the team members’ cores.
“I think that I’ll have a much better season with Coach Reeves this year. I think that things like our strength and core training will make me faster in not only my cross season but in track as well,” senior Cuba Burch Berner said.
Reeves has been coaching cross-country for 26 years. He was at Glendora High School for seven years, South Hills High School for 11 years, Azusa Pacific University for five, and has been an assistant coach at CHS for three. Throughout his time and experience, he received the California Cross Country Coach of the Year award in 1999 and was named the Golden State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year seven times.
The cross-country team is working very hard, and Reeves is helping them perform at their peak. With his years of experience and knowledge, he is always providing advice for each runner. Reeves goes above and beyond what his athletes believe they can do, and motivates them to do even better.
“Coach Reeves pushes the team to its limits and allows us to perform [at] our very best. He individually sets goals for us that we didn’t even think was possible and is always motivating me everyday in practice to do my best for every workout and
for every run,” senior Brooke Weigand said.
The cross-country team has many exciting races coming up soon. With the athletes working even harder this year, Reeves hopes to get both the boys’ and girls’ teams on the podium for both CIF Finals and the state meet. With all of the extra training and guidance, the cross country team will start its season with an incredible coach who truly cares for his runners.
“I love the entire team, and my favorite part of the day is coming to practice and being with everyone because they are all fun to be around,” Reeves said.
The intense summer practices are a good indication of the season the team will have with Reeves. Cross-country had a great start to its year, and with Reeves as the new head coach, the team cannot wait to step on that line to show everyone what it can do.
