It is Not a Small World After All With Increased Globalization

The influx of production and the availability of goods, such as iPhones, Coca-Cola, and the Kardashians is largely thanks to globalization, the international market of sharing products as well as world views. Globalization exploded after the end of the Cold War as more countries decided to adapt to market economies, and leave behind Communism. International trade increased and this was extremely beneficial because more products were available to everyone and things were cheaper. Although globalization has weakened some states and countries as well as having negative effects on the global environment, globalization had done a great deal to form this world, including decreased poverty rates, increased education, and an increased number of jobs.

Poverty has decreased immensely since globalization has occurred, lowering the percentage of individuals living in poverty worldwide. According to the Economist, on June 1, 2013, extreme poverty had been reduced from 43% worldwide to just 21%. In 1990, the absolute number of people living in poverty was 1.9 billion; today, researchers from the Brookings Institution estimate that number to be 820 million. The Economist has also shown that globalization and economic growth lifted 680 million people out of extreme poverty in China and India reduced their poverty by 15% between 2005 and 2012. The level of poverty worldwide has decreased by hundreds of millions since the year 1990 and that is due to globalization.

Globalization has not only decreased poverty, but it has also increased access to education. Hundreds of millions of people have been enrolled in schools since the late 20th century due to the availability of education in a globalized world. This directly contributes to economic growth. The overall rise in education has been over 60% per year for the past decade. As the level of access to education increases, the level of individuals living in poverty decreases, thus showing that globalization is working to help the reduction of poverty.

Globalization also increases jobs as economic growth begin to flourish. According to Foreign Affairs, many countries have been experiencing sustained growth rates of 7-10% as 13 countries have grown by more than 7% per year for 25 years or more.

Although globalization has its negative and positive effects on the world, globalization is practically inevitable and does more good than harm by decreasing poverty and increasing education and jobs. Globalization increases pollution, but if it were to stop, then overall trading would decrease and the amount of goods that individuals have access to would be limited. At the same time however, globalization provides for a greater market for alternative energy.
To combat the negative effects of globalism, more effort should be put into the creation of alternative energy. The benefits of globalization, such as decreased unemployment, decreased poverty, and better education far outweigh the short term costs that come with it. The improvements made so far in the world prove that globalization is beneficial to all.
