Bohren on Varsity Tennis
Freshman Leyton Bohren trains everyday to reach his goal of becoming a professional tennis player. He has been playing since he was five and has already reached the skill level needed to play with the boys varsity team at CHS. With motivation from his dad as well as from the varsity coach, Clint Rees, Bohren feels determined to reach his dream of being able to go to college with a tennis scholarship.
From his training at the Upland Tennis Center and Azusa Pacific University every day for two hours, Bohren excels at both singles and doubles matches. However, he is more comfortable playing singles because he has been trained more on a single perspective. On the CHS varsity team, he is usually ranked either number one or number two singles. To achieve such a high spot on the team he has won many matches and outplayed some of his teammates. Since Bohren already knew most of the boys on the team, it was easy for him to fit in.
“Leyton is overall a great person and has a very good attitude towards practices and games,” sophomore varsity tennis player Christian Settles said. “Sometimes when he loses a game, he does this high shriek with his voice, which is funny, but he gets back to his old self again.”
To train and prepare for games, he warms up, hits for an hour, and trains for 30 minutes. After he feels like he is warmed up enough, he then hits again for about 30 minutes to one hour, stretches, and listens to music to prepare himself for the match.
“I like that it is all you, there is no one else you have to rely on, so if you win it’s all on you, but if you lose it is all on you,” Bohren said. “Tennis is sometimes like a single sport so you do not always have that team aspect.”
Rees has high hopes for the team and Bohren because of the skill level they are playing at. He has been with the boys for three seasons and sees great potential in them.
“Leyton’s attitude towards tennis and wanting to play the game because he loves it is great, and he always has a positive attitude towards everything,” Coach Rees said.
Along with big goals for himself, Bohren also has goals he wants to achieve with his teammates. The CHS boys varsity team strives to win league and then win more than two games in CIF. In order to achieve this, Leyton and the team will continue to work hard during practice and in games. With such strong players on the team, they are confident that their goal will be achieved by the end of the season.
