“My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, and they’re like, it’s better than yours…” This audio has been trending on the internet, from being used in dances to infamous Gap denim advertisements. Gap’s “Better in Denim” advertisement stars global girl group Katseye, a novel move. This marketing campaign has been successful for both Gap and Katseye, and people have compared it to the similar, but controversial, American Eagle Sydney Sweeney advertisement, where Sweeney has shocked people with her inappropriate actions. As popular media plays a higher role of relevance in high schoolers’ lives, it is important for students to be aware of positive and negative examples of media portrayals of products.
Sweeney was shown in multiple American Eagle advertisements promoting their jeans. In one advertisement, Sweeney was lying on the floor “struggling” to button her jeans, eventually showing a revealing scene. Sophomore Timothy Ho found this ad to be weird. “I feel like it was too seductive for a jean ad because of the way she was talking,” Ho said. “Her tone was very seductive.”
This is a stark contrast to Katseye’s advertisement, which showcased a unique dance to the popular song “Milkshake,” with many artistic moves. Not to mention, Gap also included this message with the release of their ad, “This denim is how you define it. Your individuality. Your self-expression. Your style. Powerful on your own. Even better together.” In comparison, the American Eagle advertisement focused more on Sydney Sweeney rather than their denim products. Freshman Avelyn Oh adds on to these thoughts and says,
“I think their approach is very clearly a response to the American Eagle ad and Sydney Sweeney,” Oh said. “It’s very clearly promoting diversity and people from different places and cultural backgrounds, which is a good thing.” Through these interviews, CHS students all shared similar opinions. They displayed collective concern for the image American Eagle had created for their ad, but also praised Gap’s advertisement for its diverse representation and its message to be yourself.
