“At my core, I’m an understanding and motivated person who wants to help others,” Maciel said. Claremont High School welcomes Omar Maciel, a new teacher for special education: ES Economics and ES Government. He received his bachelor’s in history and teaching credentials from Cal Poly Pomona and his master’s from Azusa Pacific University. His thesis focused on the impact of the Civil Rights Movement on sports.
Maciel found his teaching passion in high school as an AVID tutor while working with students who needed support. “I found it gratifying that I was able to help those students,” Maciel said.
An essential part of his job is helping students advocate for themselves. “Even if it’s a question you’ve asked two [or] three times, get clarification again,” Maciel said.
Maciel enjoys movies, hiking, travel, and sports—especially the Clippers. As a self-proclaimed “movie buff,” Maciel researches actors, directors, and cinematography in his favorite movies, such as “The Thing” and “The Lord Of The Rings” trilogy. “Try to have some sort of balance and make sure you listen to those positive influences in life,” Maciel said. “I think that’s key.”
Omar Maciel is an exciting addition to Claremont High School, ready to make a positive impact on his students and school.
