From tee to degree, standout golf prodigy Kristina Xu continues to shoot for the moon. When she swings, she sinks–every time, and as her high school career comes to an end, college is looking no different. Come fall, Xu is headed to New York City to play golf for Columbia University, making every swing count.
Xu started off her golf career at only three-years-old after her mom suggested it to Xu and her sister.
“My sister was really the blueprint, I just liked copying everything she did, so it was natural for me to start golf,” Xu said.
Little did she know, what began as a cute imitation of her sister would transform into a passion that has shaped h
er identity–and Xu would go on to be Claremont High School’s most decorated golfer. However, Xu believes that the medals and accolades do not define her proudest achievements. Every step forward is something to be proud of–and the memories she makes are worth their weight in gold.
“I feel like it is the experience and memories that are the most valuable,” Xu said. “So, my proudest moment or achievement would just be pushing through and always doing my best and working my hardest.”
When looking at the proof of her successes, nothing demonstrates it more than her championship at the 2023 Stanford tournament. All of her experiences, both in memories and competition, have led Xu to want to continue golf at the collegiate level.
Keeping her eye on the prize was the biggest factor in choosing Columbia. Not only does the school have a place for Xu on the course, but also in the classroom.
“I never really put much thought into a specific college, but I did know that I wanted a school that was equally rigorous in their athletics to their academics.” Xu said. “Columbia fits those requirements, and it makes it even more exciting that it is in New York City.”
In the Big Apple, Xu is looking forward to a new chapter of her life. With a fresh start in a new place with new people, Xu sees lots of opportunities to make lifelong memories and keep her career options open.
“As of right now I do not really have a good grasp of what I want in the future,” Xu said. “It all really depends on what happens in the next few years.”
Xu wants to acknowledge her gratitude for all of the memories she had made throughout high school. Xu holds dear her friendships, experiences and knowledge she has gained in the past four years. Above all, Xu’s fondest memory is senior ditch day, skipping school to go to the beach with her dearest friends.
“If I were to give any advice to freshmen it would be do not be scared to try something new, just go for it, have fun, and make a lot of memories!” Xu said. “I would love to shout out to all my great friends Ava, Maya, Jeremiah, Niki, and Ale. Thanks for everything, I love you guys lots!”
