A new year means a new Golden Globes Ceremony–and potential new celebrity engagements. From rumors about Tom Holland and Zendaya’s engagement, to the controversy of “Emilia Pérez,” the 82nd Golden Globes has made its way up the ranks as one of the most prominent award ceremonies of the year. But before the credits rolled, the event itself was quite a show.
This year’s Golden Globes featured many popular actors and actresses, such as Cate Blanchett and Denzel Washington. Notably, Romanian-American actor Sebastian Stan, known for his role as James “Bucky” Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, received his first well-deserved Golden Globes award. Dominican actress Zoe Saldaña, also known for playing Gamora in the MCU, won her first award as well. Demi Moore also received her first major acting award across her 40-year-long career, followed by a moving speech, in which she explained the ups and downs of her acting career. Moreover, 2024 has been a huge year for films and TV series. Especially for categories such as Best Motion Picture – Animated, with contenders including “Moana 2,” “Inside Out 2,” and “The Wild Robot.” However, “Flow” took home the win. Directed by Gints Zilbalodis with 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is about a cat who loses his home in a flood and must cooperate with other animals despite their differences. It is a truly heartwarming and emotional film, and many agree with the award it received.
Another big category was Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, with movies like “BeetlejuiceBeetlejuice” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” being nominated. In the end, “Wicked” won this category with a whopping $611 million made at the box office. “Wicked” was one of the most celebrated films of the year, with celebrities such as Ariana Grande starring in it. Its box office success and its 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes do reflect its high expectations, but does the public agree? Sophomore Summer Calimlim shared her thoughts.
“I think [Wicked] deserved to win,” Calimlim said. “It was based on the musical, but
added a lot more scenes and details.”
Despite “Wicked” being one of the most popular films of the year, “The Brutalist” was extremely successful as well, earning seven nominations and three wins, including Best Motion Picture – Drama. Finally, “Shōgun” swept the awards and nominations among the TV series categories, winning four awards and beating out “Squid Game 2.” The show was praised for its culturally accurate portrayal of Japan’s historical narrative. Set in 17th-century Japan, “Shōgun” focuses on themes of honor, loyalty, and culture. At first, the series suffered skepticism but had a breakthrough at last year’s Emmy Awards where it received a record-breaking 18 awards.
Another notable win was “Emilia Pérez,” which won Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. However, opposite of “Shōgun”, it was criticized for its “poor depiction of Mexican culture and awkward or even offensive transgender representation,” according to The Huntington News. It received a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, lower than many films included at the Golden Globes, and a 6.1/10 on IMDb. However, it received ten nominations, the second most nominations a single film has gotten in Golden Globes history, surpassing “Cabaret” and “Barbie.”
Aside from celebrities and prestigious awards, rumors sparked about a potential engagement between Tom Holland and Zendaya, one of the most popular celebrity couples. TMZ and People Magazine have already “confirmed” the engagement. Zendaya appeared at the awards without Holland, as she was nominated for her role in “Challengers.” Fans noticed that she walked the red carpet alone. Although the couple has been dating for a while, it has been three years since the two have walked a red carpet together. In an interview with Men’s Health, Holland shared why.
“It’s her moment,” Holland said. “If we go together, it’s about us.”
It does seem difficult to manage a relationship in which both partners are Hollywood stars, but Zendaya recently shared that Holland “handled it beautifully” in an interview with British Vogue. The actress also talked about plans to work with Holland on more on-screen activities together, leaving fans excited for the future.
This year’s Golden Globes have been especially cinematic, showcasing brilliant screenplay, plot, and acting performances. Not only that, but followers heard from a fan-favorite couple, their heartwarming reason for not showing up at red carpets together, and a possible engagement– a fitting theme for this Valentine’s Day. So lights, camera, action: get ready for a new and exciting year in the film industry.
