“Wait, how do I indent my paper?” Unfortunately, it’s impossible to do on an iPad. If only students had laptops! Devices provided to students play a crucial role in shaping their learning experience. While issuing iPads to each student has its advantages, it also falls short in several areas. Switching to Chromebooks would be a more practical and effective choice that addresses challenges associated with iPads and enhances the overall educational experience.
One of the primary drawbacks of iPads is their reliance on accessories to use them comfortably. For example, using apps like Notability (which also costs money, although covered by the school) to take notes or complete assignments often requires the purchase of an Apple Pencil, a costly accessory not included. Without this tool, writing on an iPad with one’s finger or a stylus becomes difficult and imprecise. In contrast, Chromebooks come equipped with full keyboards and trackpads, without the need for additional expensive accessories—making it easier for students to write, edit, and annotate without extra costs.
Another significant issue with iPads is their formatting, particularly when viewing or editing documents. Many students struggle with the iPad’s screen layout, which can make navigating and managing documents unnecessarily complicated. Whether it is a research paper, a group project, or a slide presentation, the lack of a traditional file management system on iPads can reduce productivity. Chromebooks, on the other hand, work like traditional laptops with user-friendly file organization systems and compatibility with widely used platforms such as Google Drive and Microsoft Office. This familiarity allows students to work more efficiently and collaborate on assignments. CHS freshman, Logan Towner, agrees.
“I don’t like iPads because they’re small and I type slow,” Towner said. “They also don’t have as many features as Chromebooks.”
It is clear that Chromebooks would provide a more efficient and accessible learning experience for students. By addressing the challenges posed by iPads, Chromebooks can help eliminate unnecessary obstacles to productivity and creativity.
Another advantage is their multitasking capability. Unlike iPads, which can only display two apps side by side at a time, Chromebooks allow students to view multiple windows, tabs, and applications simultaneously. This feature is crucial for students working on complex tasks, such as conducting research while writing essays or referencing notes.
From a cost perspective, Chromebooks are often more affordable than iPads and come with fewer required accessories. For the school, this means a reduced financial burden when issuing students with devices. Chromebooks also have longer lifespans in terms of software updates and durability, which further increases their cost-effectiveness.
For many students, owning a personal laptop is not financially possible, making the school-provided device essential for completing assignments. iPads often fall short due to their reliance on costly accessories and limited functionality. Chromebooks, with their built-in keyboards, better multitasking capabilities, and ease of use, offer a more practical solution. By providing Chromebooks, the school can ensure all students have an equal opportunity to succeed.
