Chromakopia, Chromakopia, Chromakopia—anyone and everyone has been hearing the album ever since its release on October 17, 2024. Tyler, The Creator’s new album Chromakopia seems to have been rocking the nation—even the whole world. Starting from a young age, Tyler’s unique vision and self-produced music have made him a powerhouse in the music industry, winning multiple Grammys and other awards, such as his eight BET Hip-Hop awards.
Tyler’s success goes even beyond musical awards. He has become a cultural icon. Freshman Sam Acevedo expresses his admiration for Tyler.
“He’s the voice of a generation. It’s absolutely amazing,” Acevedo said.
This sentiment is echoed by students and even some teachers at CHS (such as Mr. Barcelona). It seems as if both millennials and Gen Z are captivated by Chromakopia.
But what is the backstory of this album? Tyler grew up in the Los Angeles area, which is the place where he kick-started his career in the music industry. He grew up with his mother, Bonita Smith, who plays a significant role in this new album, as she is featured on several of the songs. His father was absent throughout his life, and this is a big talking point throughout the album. In one song, “Like Him,” he talks about his relationship with his father, or lack of one, and how he does not want to end up like him if he has kids.
Beyond all of the personal experiences expressed in this album, a large part of it is experimental and creative. Each of his albums has a character. For Chromakopia, it was a character bringing light and color to the world; on a deeper level, speaking a lot about how Tyler wants his audience to see how he is bringing color and light to people’s lives.
