Holding the title of Captain in any sport is no easy feat. The position requires years of training and leadership experience. Senior William Roby-Unkovich embodies these attributes as he leads the Pack as Captain of the Boys Varsity Water Polo Team. Having been a part of the Varsity team since his freshman year, Roby-Unkovich has gained lots of experience in the pool and grown into a strong leader. This season, he is determined to make a splash, aiming to end his high school career with a memorable season.
Roby-Unkovich’s leadership style is based on inclusivity and support.
“I try to bring everyone up to a level so we’re all equal,” Roby-Unkovich said.
He believes that a team is only as strong as its weakest player. This ideology has led him to ensure every teammate understands their role. On top of that, he makes sure to balance kindness with a strong and direct approach, making sure that his teammates know what is expected of them. Having a co-captain like Senior Kyle Mahfoud also helps him effectively guide the team and keep everyone in check.
Promoting a sense of teamwork and camaraderie in the team is really important, especially during tough practices or games. Roby-Unkovich does this by creating an environment where humor and hard work coexist. This playfulness helps to strengthen the bond among teammates, and allows them to enjoy each other’s company while staying focused when it matters. Recently, he celebrated a standout moment in the season when his team defeated the favorites Glendora by ten points. According to Roby-Unkovich it was the best team performance this season and the team came with a lot of confidence and really pushed themselves.
Like any athlete, Roby-Unkovich has faced challenges throughout his water polo journey. Roby-Unkovich’s biggest challenge has been paying attention to his coach’s instructions. Although, through perseverance to improvement, he has learned the importance of listening to those who guide him. His older brother, George, has played an important role in his development both in and out of the pool.
“He’s kind and helps me be a better version of myself. If I need any help, I can always go to him,” Roby-Unkovich said.
Balancing being an athlete with academic responsibilities is not easy either. William recognizes the need to prioritize his time, and often sacrifices personal activities to stay on top of schoolwork. The season is time-consuming, therefore staying on top of schoolwork is crucial to balance his commitments effectively. This discipline has not only contributed to his success in water polo but has also prepared him for college and beyond that.
Looking ahead, Roby-Unkovich wants to continue playing water polo at either the University of La Verne or Mt. Sac, both of which have shown interest in his sporting ability. He also hopes to pursue a degree in forensic science. His dreams of collegiate athletics, alongside good academics, is sure to be achieved.
To younger players hoping to reach the varsity level, Roby-Unkovich offers some advice.
“Put in the hard work and listen to your coach,” Roby-Unkovich said. “Always be coachable. Never tell your coaches they are wrong because they always have valuable things to say.”
Being part of the water polo team has very much impacted Roby-Unkovich’s life. Through water polo, Roby-Unkovich had something to look forward to with friends, improving his overall high school experience. The joy of competition and camaraderie are all things that have created bonds with teammates and ignited lasting friendships for him.
