At the end of last year, senior Annika Ellwanger-Chavez started a program with the help of ASB called Random Acts of Kindness. Through it, students are recognized for notable achievements that make an impact. The program is run by Ellwanger-Chavez and her Renaissance committee, who keep tabs on clubs and teams. The committee members report any extra-special achievement made by anyone at CHS to Ellwanger-Chavez, who rewards them with a certificate and various prizes. Open to any individual here at the high school, ASB’s Random Acts of Kindness program’s main goal is to highlight under appreciated acts of people at CHS.

“I’ve noticed that, being in ASB and other activities, a lot of times only sports teams get recognized,” Ellwanger-Chavez said.

In fact, when the program started up last year, the only people who did get acknowledged were sports team members. However currently, the program has rewarded art students for their participation in the LA County Fair Art Show, speech and debate members for their competition wins, and new students with spirit packs that the members personally make and deliver. More specifically, Ellwanger-Chavez and her committee members have acknowledged junior Emmalyn Spruce for writing and recording an original song and receptionist Arcie Hadfield for conquering the battle with breast cancer.

“I think this is great idea. A few weeks ago, they distributed 17 CHS Spirit Bags for all the new students to CHS in grades 10, 11, and 12,” Principal Brett O’Connor said. “I think those types of actions let students know they are not ‘anonymous’ at CHS.”

Random Acts of Kindness is set to encourage the people of CHS to keep striving to do their best and accomplish great things. With the assistance of Ellwanger-Chavez and her Renaissance committee, students, teachers, proctors, office members, and anyone here on the CHS campus are being recognized and awarded for their eventful achievements that previously may have gone unnoticed.
