Mr. Bruce Pottorff’s Story

I was a victim of abuse in my early teens, and smoking weed allowed me to forget about the shame and guilt so many abuse victims feel. One thing led to another and by my late 20s I was a full-blown drug addict and alcoholic. At the age of 35, I was able to get clean and sober with help from a group of like-minded people.
Within 2 years, I was a student at Pitzer College and graduated with Honors in Philosophy in 1996. By 1999 I had a Masters Degree in Education and was offered a teaching job at CHS, the same school from which I had failed to graduate in 1975. I’ve been teaching here ever since, and I still love coming to work every day. I am one of the lucky ones; most people like me die or end up in prison. If you are struggling with substance abuse, get help. I’ve known many people who got clean and sober while still in their teens. Do it now, and your life can be even more amazing than mine.
